Sustainability for Carucel AS

At Carucel AS, we’re dedicated to sustainable growth and we seek to contribute to a more just, robust, and environmentally conscious future. In specific terms, we work on measuring energy and water consumption at all our properties, facilitating good reporting systems and identifying saving measures. With a basis in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, we have selected three of these goals as being particularly relevant to our business, anchoring our sustainability efforts in these. The three Sustainable Development Goals are: 8 – Decent work and economic growth 11 – Sustainable cities and communities 12 – Responsible consumption and production

Sustainability in practice

With our sustainable guidelines as a foundation, we’ve made commitments to projects that promote green city development, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support community development, and preserve cultural heritage.

These initiatives represent our belief that sustainability and social responsibility are key in creating a more just, durable, and environmentally conscious future for Oslo, Nusfjord, and the communities to which we belong. We are dedicated to continuously following up and improving our efforts in ESG and remaining future-oriented with regard to sustainability in the real estate industry.

Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth

One of Carucel’s core areas of focus is setting up equal opportunities for everyone. We take the sustainability goal seriously by prioritising just work practices, including our employees’ wellbeing and fair pay. We promote equal opportunities and invest in training and development opportunities for all employees.

Our support to local businesses and economies through cooperation with local suppliers and contractors is also part of our commitment. We are also dedicated to diversity, and we believe in the value of different forms of expertise and experience, which can make a positive contribution to the company’s development. For this reason, gender diversity is an integrated component of Carucel’s HR policy. As of June 2023, women make up 43% of our employees.

Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities

Through projects like Fyrstikkbakken and Nusfjord Arctic Resort, we contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 11. Fyrstikkbakken is one of Norway’s leading climate and environmental projects in residential construction.

The project consists of 160 environmentally friendly apartments at Bryn in Oslo. We’ve achieved an over 50% cut in greenhouse gas emissions through the use of high-tech, solid timber, solar power systems, and adaptations for cycling and electric vehicles. Sharing solutions such as working from home, guest rooms, and parcel gardens are also available. Fyrstikkbakken 14 was built in cooperation with Birk & Co. Nusfjord Arctic Resort is a unique destination in the Nusfjord fishing village in Lofoten, Norway. We’ve invested over NOK 100 million into upgrades and maintenance for the resort. The goal is to offer unique experiences to tourists while simultaneously preserving the fishing village and shielding it from mass tourism. We’re proud to be the majority shareholders of Nusfjord AS and Nusfjord Drift AS. We are committed to projects that support sustainable cities and local communities through environmentally friendly construction practices, the reduction of climate gas emissions, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production

By prioritising the use of sustainable materials and products in our construction, maintenance, and operational processes, we contribute to the Sustainable Development Goal for responsible consumption and production. We’ve implemented recycling programmes and encourage tenants to embrace sustainable practices to reduce waste.

We also offer incentives to tenants who put sustainable measures to use, focusing on saving energy and water through the use of smart technology. We also ensure that our suppliers and contractors uphold sustainable practices and ethical sourcing and production methods. One example of our investments into sustainable development is Oslobukta, a future-oriented and sustainable urban development project. We have implemented environmental targets and concrete climate measures in our development programme. Our goal is to halve emissions from our buildings compared to reference buildings. We also take into account transportation to and from our buildings, energy consumption, and emissions from the production of construction materials. We impose strict requirements on our suppliers and tenants in order to ensure a low volume of emissions and a good indoor climate without harmful substances.
